The love lab is the newest dating reality show currently airing on Netflix. The premise is potential love interests are put in unusual situations in hopes of bringing them closer to one another.
The hosts, Joohoney and Charles Enter give commentary throughout the episodes. They are so funny talking about what is happening on the show. They have good chemistry and play off each other well. As an international viewer, their cultural references to how the couples are reacting towards each other is helpful and I feel you can get a better understanding of the show.
Episode 1 introduces us to Park Chan-yang and Kim Myung–ju. The two are given a set of rules and start their dating experiment. For their challenge, they are to spend their “dates” in a bed. They are to go to work as normal during the day, and return in the evening and resume their “date” at night. The potential pair are expected to be their natural selves, meaning no makeup and pajamas all day.
Can you imagine meeting your blind date, inside of a hotel room, dressed in pjs, and expected to be just yourself?
Which leads me to my next question? Would I be willing to do that? I am 50/50 split. On one hand, you are in a controlled environment without any distractions and can focus on your date. On the other hand, it is extreme, and really intimate. You’re basically in a room with a complete stranger. One silver lining could be, if the date is bad, you can just roll over and go to sleep and forget that nightmare ever happened.
As the couple gets to know each other better, they are given prompts to help break the ice further. Towards the end of the first day, both Chan-yang and Myung-ju are sill trying to feel each other out, and that’s understandable. But, you do get a sense there is some chemistry starting to build between them.
This new concept of dating is refreshing from your typically dating shows. The format is different, the hopeful couples are put in a sudden situation that can cause them to get close fast and early. It truly is an experiment and one that I hope is successful.
